The "Half-Breed" was great. The steak was cooked just right and the service was excellent. Johnny (the owner ) is friendly and really enjoys visiting with his customers. Chips and Salsa were great. Great family environment.

Save your palette and go to Joseph's. Smallest Chimi in the WORLD!! Their menu says their Chimi is wrapped using a giant tortilla, but our chimi's were about the size of a normal enchilada. Never have I seen this small of a Chimi. They charge for the 2nd bowl of chips in their 4" bowl, and the homemade salsa recipe needs to be rethought as it was bland and not spicy at all. Side of beans is whole pinto, so don't expect refried. Rice - can't really tell you about that because there wasn't enough to support an opinion. The ONLY thing about their version of Mexican food was the heat - it was spicy. However, while I really like my spices, I prefer FLAVOR over that. This was one of the blandest dishes I have had in a long time. But it was hot.

My sister and I were road tripping from Houston to Denver. It was noon. We were starving. I pulled over, pulled up Yelp and almost wept at the lack of stars most places had. After reading some of the reviews, we settled on Comet II -- and I'm glad we did. FOOD Get their Mexican dishes. They offer other typical American dishes, but if you ask the waitresses what's good it's their homemade chile sauces. I would recommend the carnitas burrito special smothered in the red chile and cheese. It's all homemade. My sister (who had a dairy allergy) loved the chicken enchiladas. I also couldn't get enough of the fresh chips and salsa. SERVICE We came in at noon on a Saturday and had no problems at all. There was a large group and a few other tables. The owner of the restaurant actually came out to chat with a man and his senior father. They were going between English, Spanish and what I'm guessing was an Indian dialect. It was really cool to hear them swap stories -- what I could understand. This is also a flag for why you should try their Mexican dishes. COST Our tab was under $20 for two entrees and two drinks. My giant burrito was only $8 and my sister's enchiladas were about the same. No complaints. ATMOSPHERE You're in Santa Rosa. Adjust your expectations. They keep a clean establishment -- bathrooms included. It's not fancy, but it's a cute, retro restaurant. Would return.

I read all reviews before coming in, so kind of knew what to expect. The problem I saw right away was that they do not have enough help. There was a very personable young man who brought our menus and silverware, but he seemed to be unable to function without direction. The place had maybe five of about twenty plus tables occupied, but the table next to us was left full of dirty dishes. Yuk! Now to the food. The hot sauce was great! Would have brought some home with me if I could have! Hubby had the chimichangas and said they were fair...not enough meat in them, but flavor was good. I had chile rellenos, which I LOVE...but the batter was way too thick. The green sauce they used was tasty, and had a fresh little salad, too. Will we be back? Likely not.

Very average tasting food. The sweet tea was made with sweetener and not sugar. The $10 bowl of menudo was the smallest bowl of menudo that I've ever seen served at a restaurant. The chimichanga that I ordered was probably bought at the truck-stop down the road. For $10 it should have been made in the restaurant. Next time I come through I'll try Joseph's restaurant. There were a lot more cars parked at that place.

First time here: Muy bueno!! We had the the Gran Platito Enchiladas, and the Chicken Chimichanga. Both were amazing! We wanted to lick the plate!! The refried beans are delicious and are like nothing I have had before. The wait staff was friendly and lovely. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend stopping here if you have the chance while passing by!

We had the experience of dining at the Comet II and an experience it was. To say the service is slow is an understatement. Once your order is taken be prepared for another lengthy wait for your food to be served. I had the "Smothered Burrito". Prior to ordering, I asked the waitress if had meat in it? It is in the chile sauce was the response. Let me tell you Campbell soup's chicken noodle soup has an abundance of chicken compared to the meat in this burrito. In fact no meat was noted. It truly was a bean burrito. My wife had a chile relleno. Same story re: absence of meat. Should you decide to satiate your appetite with chips and salsa, you will be disappointed. The chips served with meal consisted of a small salad bowl of chips and maybe, being generous, a half cup of salsa. A refill will set you back an additional $2.25. This place is expensive for what you get. The food is a disappointment and the service, I believe was described previously. In short, take your chances somewhere else.

It's okay...10.50 for a bean tostado. No meat just beans, lettuce, tomato , sour cream and guacamole. Sounds like a lot but not much to it. Kind of a giant nacho? Lol. We eat real Mexican food in Texas... Not sure if this is even tex-mex??? Good side my son ordered beans and tortillas.. This was good. Home made tortillas are always the best! Pork enchiladas were okay. Rolled skinny not fat like the menu said. Rice was not homemade...thank you uncle Ben. Give you a fruit bowl size of corn chips and salsa...the next bowl you pay for. Side note the two waitresses were eating the chile rellanos. Maybe that's what we should have ordered.

Ok, let's make a fair comparison here. This is Santa Rosa, not Manhattan or San Francisco. Pickings are a little slim when it comes to restaurants. Comet II is a nice little place, with tasty food and fast service. Not on par with serious places in ABQ, but it could hold its own there. Prices are high, but again, Santa Rosa. Good quality and fair prices if you go with reasonable expectations. I had their carne burrito with rice and beans on the side and covered in red chile. Pork was excellent, and the chile nicely spicy though not crazy by any means. Beans and rice were tasty but not 'wow'. Worth a stop.

i personally loved it here.. i loved the tacos! I can only comment on the tacos as that is the only thing i ate.. and i ate there twice in less then 24 hours.. had to have them again before i left town!

We were passing through town on an extended road trip and were so pleased that we did! The ground beef tacos were delicious; the refried beans were homemade (not canned) and the chimichanga was beautiful and regional, smothered in homemade green chile. Make sure you save room for the pie. It's homemade, with the best crust I've ever eaten. The food is more expensive than a trip to Denny's or Cracker Barrel, but worth it. Make sure you read Johnny's testament regarding his mission statement for his restaurant. His passion and sense of humor shine like a diamond. A real local gem in the desert.

This place barely deserves the one star I afforded it. Service if that's what you would call it was deplorable. The evening we went there were only 4 tables with patrons and it still took over 15 minutes to place our order and that was after waving the waitress down. Sensing the disorganization, my wife decided to keep it simple and ordered a cheese quesadilla and they managed the screw that up as it came with some sort of mystery meat in it. After taking another 15 minutes to correct, our drinks ( water and a Pepsi ) needed refilling. There goes another 5 minutes after requesting said refills. And guess what - I got ice tea this time. When we went to pay the same "waitress" ran the cash register and we had to stare her down to pay. I asked a local who was waiting to pay as well if he ate there often. He replied that was his second visit and his last. To boot the food is barely average . Pretty sad for New Mexico. Avoid this place- it's a train wreck!

After driving around Santa Rosa to see The Blue Hole, Puerto de Luna, and other local sights in this city located along interstate 40 on the old Route 66, we needed dinner. Where to go? Local PR proudly tells us about all the old Rte 66 type diners nearby, and indeed there are several that play up their locations. We were discouraged after reading so many negative reviews and seeing so many closed or dilapidated places. Finally we decided to try Comet II - we made a good choice. The restaurant must have been a drive-in at one time, but no longer. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. Drinks along with chips and salsa came quickly. We tried the local chile from PDL on enchiladas...so good. husband said he gives his burrito a full "5", saying he cannot imagine what could make it better (it came topped with green sauce and he splurged on guacamole for an extra quarter). We shared a piece of homemade peach pie with ice cream and left quite happy with our 'find'. Service was friendly and fine. Decor is basic diner, but that goes with the location. We recommend the restaurant.

This place has authentic Mexican in a cool revamped drive in. The food is no frills, but good. Prices are good as well. My wife had the Fajitas but they did not give her tortillas and we didn't check. It wasa takeout order. I had the spicy been burrito and it was good. There wasn't much flavor to the meat sauce. Overall a good place!

Food tastes great. We had tilapia, chimichanga, and corn nuggets. All were tasty. Service can be slow but we came in the afternoon with only one server. Overall we're happy we chose here for late lunch.

Food was authentic Mexican. We had chili renellos and carnita enchiladas. Enchilada sauce was fresh and heavily spiced with roasted chili. Renellos were like I make at home with fresh chilis. The salsa was crowning glory. Heavy garlic and chili which bit with every taste. Wonderful! Ambiance was quaint.

What a surprise! We stopped on the way east at Santa Rosa and found the Comet II Drive In and Restaurant. Definitely no longer a drive in but a very nice, friendly, and very clean restaurant. The beef fajitas and PDL salsa were excellent. I ordered a prime rib sandwich and was amazed when a half inch thick slice of prime rib showed up on grilled toast. A small cup of home made warm natilles dessert was included in the lunch price. I rarely want to lick a bowl clean but was tempted. A definite stop if you find yourself in Santa Rosa.

We drove here as we were passing through making a special trip off the freeway. They had a difficult time getting our order right. The carnitas pork was tasty but it was drowned in red enchilada sauce which was overpowering, in my opinion. Not too many options on the menu on the Mexican side, if chili is not your favorite. Not such a great choice! It also smelled like the bathroom in there.

SLOW service - almost NO service!! No one seemed organized or able to prioritize. It was as if 5 year olds were running the restaurant. After 15 minutes someone took our order. Eventually they brought us food. They never came back to check on us or even bring a check. Eventually we joined the crowd at the register that was waiting to pay. When it was our turn, we told the person that we didn't have our check. She wandered off to find the other waitress to get our check. Oh, but then she was distracted by people wanting SERVICE. Our waitress saw us waiting to pay the check we never received but went off to wipe off a table. Other tables remained uncleared. I saw 2 tables leave after waiting and waiting and not getting anyone to take their order. There were a total of 3 servers on a Saturday night, and the restaurant wasn't even that crowded. Now I know why - I'm sure the locals stay away. Since this almost non-existent service is commonly noted in these reviews, I can only assume management knows and still can't get their act together. You have been warned!

There aren't a lot of choices in Santa Rosa, so we were pretty pleased with this food. It was pretty empty so the service was good and our waitress was very nice. It only took a couple minutes for our food to come out and it was pretty good. A little expensive for what you get, but good. It was a little spicy for me but that's just personal taste. The decor is old school Route 66, but isn't too grungy.

Friends, as many of you know, I'm an over-the-road trucker, at least for now. I've decided to Yelp as many of the more interesting places I encounter on this latest chapter of the adventures of Raoul as I can. Alas, I have to agree with the previous reviewer, the service in this place was indifferent to the point of obnoxiousness. I was driving through Santa Rosa on my way to Arizona, stopped in a vacant lot next to this place to consult my map, decided it was time for some lunch. From the outside, the place had a certain small-town charm, so in I went, and was promptly ignored for at least ten minutes. Was just about to get up and leave, when an older gentleman engaged me in conversation, he was apparently the owner, nice guy, and all-of-a-sudden, the help got interested, iced tea and a menu arrived. I figured, "whatthehell", ordered a "Carnita Burrito", one of the less expensive items. Most of the entrees and combination plates in this place were in excess of $12, pretty pricey for lunch at an out-of-the-way place in central New Mexico, way far away from Santa Fe, by god. A medium-to-small size burrito appeared, no sides of beans an' rice, charged extra for smothering with red sauce an' cheese, and some guacamole that had been stirred up to mask it's less-than-freshness. Thoroughly underwhelming food and service. Tea, entree, and a slice of pie added up to over $15 for lunch, fairly steep. I wonder if these smaller places out on the highways an' by-ways realize the power of Google, Yelp, etc., and how much extra business it could bring them if they stopped acting like a bunch of small-town a**holes, and delivered up good service and food to EVERYBODY who comes through their door.

My girlfriend and I stopped here on the way back from the Grand Canyon. I can't talk about the food as we never got to that point. We walked in the front door and a waitress told us to sit anywhere. So we sat in a booth. We saw a different waitress look at us several times and finally after about 15 minutes she came over and scolded us for sitting at a booth that had the plates cleared but not wiped off (not sure why the wouldn't wipe off the table when they cleared the dishes). She wiped off the table and then told told us that she would get back to us "IF" she could. We never even got to place a drink order. So after waiting about 10 more minutes we finally had enough and left and proceeded down the street to Joseph's Bar and Grill where we were promptly waited on. I've never been treated as rudely and indifferently at the same time as we were at Comet II. Be warned.

Stopped here for lunch. Should have known when noticed the two "Closed" signs, dispite many vehicles in the parking lot, that there was something out here. I mentioned the signs to the waitress and she literally ignored me. After sitting for 10 minutes I got up to get a menu. A waitress appeared to sell me a drink and must have been upset that I asked for water. She never came back to my table. There was more than one waitress and while a fair number of people, certainly had enough help to provide service within 20 minutes. As a traveler with hundreds of miles to go, I didn't need to wait a half hour to get to order a burger. I left and went down the street to Joseph's, where I was served appropriately. Be sure I will not be stopping at this place in the future.

We were discouraged after reading so many negative reviews and seeing so many closed or dilapidated places. Finally we decided to try Comet II - we made a good choice. The restaurant must have been a drive-in at one time, but no longer. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. Drinks along with chips and salsa came quickly. We tried the local chile from PDL on enchiladas...so good. husband said he gives his burrito a full "5", saying he cannot imagine what could make it better (it came topped with green sauce and he splurged on guacamole for an extra quarter). We shared a piece of homemade peach pie with ice cream and left quite happy with our 'find'. Service was friendly and fine. Decor is basic diner, but that goes with the location. We recommend the restaurant.

This place has authentic Mexican in a cool revamped drive in. The food is no frills, but good. Prices are good as well. My wife had the Fajitas but they did not give her tortillas and we didn't check. It wasa takeout order. I had the spicy been burrito and it was good. There wasn't much flavor to the meat sauce. Overall a good place!

We were passing through town on an extended road trip and were so pleased that we did! The ground beef tacos were delicious; the refried beans were homemade (not canned) and the chimichanga was beautiful and regional, smothered in homemade green chile. Make sure you save room for the pie. It's homemade, with the best crust I've ever eaten. The food is more expensive than a trip to Denny's or Cracker Barrel, but worth it. Make sure you read Johnny's testament regarding his mission statement for his restaurant. His passion and sense of humor shine like a diamond. A real local gem in the desert.

What a surprise! We stopped on the way east at Santa Rosa and found the Comet II Drive In and Restaurant. Definitely no longer a drive in but a very nice, friendly, and very clean restaurant. The beef fajitas and PDL salsa were excellent. I ordered a prime rib sandwich and was amazed when a half inch thick slice of prime rib showed up on grilled toast. A small cup of home made warm natilles dessert was included in the lunch price. I rarely want to lick a bowl clean but was tempted. A definite stop if you find yourself in Santa Rosa.

We drove here as we were passing through making a special trip off the freeway. They had a difficult time getting our order right. The carnitas pork was tasty but it was drowned in red enchilada sauce which was overpowering, in my opinion. Not too many options on the menu on the Mexican side, if chili is not your favorite. Not such a great choice! It also smelled like the bathroom in there.

SLOW service - almost NO service!! No one seemed organized or able to prioritize. It was as if 5 year olds were running the restaurant. After 15 minutes someone took our order. Eventually they brought us food. They never came back to check on us or even bring a check. Eventually we joined the crowd at the register that was waiting to pay. When it was our turn, we told the person that we didn't have our check. She wandered off to find the other waitress to get our check. Oh, but then she was distracted by people wanting SERVICE. Our waitress saw us waiting to pay the check we never received but went off to wipe off a table. Other tables remained uncleared. I saw 2 tables leave after waiting and waiting and not getting anyone to take their order. There were a total of 3 servers on a Saturday night, and the restaurant wasn't even that crowded. Now I know why - I'm sure the locals stay away. Since this almost non-existent service is commonly noted in these reviews, I can only assume management knows and still can't get their act together. You have been warned!

There aren't a lot of choices in Santa Rosa, so we were pretty pleased with this food. It was pretty empty so the service was good and our waitress was very nice. It only took a couple minutes for our food to come out and it was pretty good. A little expensive for what you get, but good. It was a little spicy for me but that's just personal taste. The decor is old school Route 66, but isn't too grungy.

Stopped here for lunch. Should have known when noticed the two "Closed" signs, dispite many vehicles in the parking lot, that there was something out here. I mentioned the signs to the waitress and she literally ignored me. After sitting for 10 minutes I got up to get a menu. A waitress appeared to sell me a drink and must have been upset that I asked for water. She never came back to my table. There was more than one waitress and while a fair number of people, certainly had enough help to provide service within 20 minutes. As a traveler with hundreds of miles to go, I didn't need to wait a half hour to get to order a burger. I left and went down the street to Joseph's, where I was served appropriately. Be sure I will not be stopping at this place in the future.
